Art Deco Cinema

Well, since my last post I've made it past the 100 'followers' mark - I am ever so chuffed, I really am! Thanks to everyone who has supported this blog, thus far. I've been having a lot of fun and hope to continue to do so.

Yesterday, my mum and I went to the Capri Theatre for their 'Rock 'n' Roll Nostalgia' day - a couple of bands played and then they showed Summer Holiday. Hurrah! I love Sir Cliff. The Capri is a gorgeous old art deco movie theatre and is run entirely by volunteers and, from what I gather, is still almost in its original condition. Many other theatres of its era were converted from a single theatre into many when multiplexes started popping up, so it's really quite a privilege to be able to enjoy movies as they used to be seen!

The day was sunny but rather windy! I got quite a few compliments on my outfit from older ladies, who were pleased to see someone all dressed up.

Flower: ?
Sunglasses: Stall at Rock 'n' Roll Rendezvous
Beads: Fisherman's Wharf Market
Dress: 1950s handmade, Salvo's
Gloves: Salvo's
Handbag: ?
Shoes: Big W

One of the ushers asked me if I wanted him to take my photo - I was already a little embarrassed by the attention I was getting so I made mum stand with me. I also got her to ask the ticket man if he'd mind me taking a photo.

Look at all of these gorgeous lighting fixtures.

I just love the mirror on the left. I'm also quite taken by the fireplace - the mirror above it has a koala on it!

And here's the theatre itself.

It was a lovely day and I definitely recommend the film to anyone who hasn't seen it. It's terribly corny and dated but that's what makes it so appealing! Plus, the music is great and some of the costumes are absolutely gorgeous.

I also want to mention that on Friday night, my friend Shannon and myself went to see Peaches 'n' Gin Burlesque at Cushdy. I haven't any photos but I wanted to mention it because it was a great show - and the first of theirs I've been to. It's great to see shows like this in Adelaide and they really need all the support they can get so that anything of its like can continue to flourish and grow, here. (I ended up wearing this dress but finished the outfit off with a hat, this time.)

  1. Wow, what a lovely cinema! and I'm not surprised of all the attention you were getting, you look stunning!

Also, I've found out about swing dancing: what you call east coast swing, is what is called 6 beat in the UK, and you're right, that's the easiest one to pick up!

  2. Isn't it wonderful? Aw, hehe, thank-you! =D

  16. What a great sounding day! The cinema looks great, and I love your outfit. I cannot believe a dress like that can be found at the Salvos – score!

I am going to go back to swing dancing after about 4 months off – yay!

  17. It looks beautiful! And so does your dress!

  18. What a lovely theater, and the perfect dress for the occasion! You really do know how to put an outfit together! I envy your savvy style!

We have an old 1920's theater in our town that's not deco; it's "Gothic." It looks like the set for an Errol Flynn swashbuckler. It was split into 2 theaters at one point, but now they're restoring it. It's used for live music now, not movies, so I can rarely see it with the lights on in order to get pictures! I'm so glad that people are starting to preserve our architectural heritage.

  19. How fun to be able to visit such a lovely cinema! I've never been to an older movie theater, and would be utterly over-the-moon to see a movie in one! ;) You look so gorgeous too! ;)

  20. That place is beautiful but your dress is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!

    I just love it.
