Silver Screen Sunday {Down With Love}

Now, I'm not a fan of Valentine's day - maybe it's the overpriced flowers, maybe it's the sappy cards, or maybe it's the fact that I've never been anyone's Valentine - but I'm a gal who loves a theme so, for today's Silver Screen Sunday (it's still Sunday somewhere!), I bring you Down With Love, which was directed by Peyton Reed and released in 2003.

Down With Love is a pastiche of the romantic comedies of the late 50s/early 60s starring Doris Day and Rock Hudson, most notably drawing influence from Pillow Talk and Lover Come Back. For a detailed outline of the plot (it includes spoilers) click here. This film is certainly a lot easier to appreciate if you have seen the Day/Hudson films, too. To read a little bit more about the film, there is an article on Bright Lights Film Journal and I've also found Roger Ebert's review.

Whether or not you think the film is successful as a pastiche, I think it would be ludicrous to say it isn't visually stunning - just take a look at these sets, to start with!

Top two images are Renee Zellwegger's apartment, bottom two are Ewan McGregor's bachelor pad. I love both but I think I actually prefer the bachelor pad!

Then, of course, there are the costumes, designed by Daniel Orlandi - he speaks a little about the costume design here.

I decided to stick to a pink theme and also found things that I thought not only fit this film, but would fit the Day/Hudson films it is modelled on, too.

Last, but not least, is the title theme of the movie, as sung by Judy Garland (bits of this clip appear in the film):

I hope everyone enjoyed this - Down With Love is one of my favourite movies because it's so ridiculous and so colourful. I should also add that David Hyde Pierce is absolutely spot on in the Tony Randall role. He's amazing. I didn't truly appreciate it until I watched Pillow Talk and Lover Come Back and then watched Down With Love, again.

I do hope everyone is still enjoying Silver Screen Sundays; let me know if there is anything else you'd like to see in them such as my thoughts on the film, etc.

Love,
Andi B. Goode

  1. I really love, love, love this film. It's so much fun, as well as being so visually delicious, and it never fails to cheer me up. David Hyde Pierce was my high point, too (apart from the clothes, of course).

Thanks for cheering me up on a dark and rainy day,

    Andrea xx

  3. I love LOVE this movie and would kill for Barbara's apartment, and course the clothes and Ewan McGregor with glasses and his hair all slicked back is enough to make me swoon anyway!!

  6. I've only seen the trailer for this movie, but now I'm even more intrigued to see it (if Ewan McGregor in an impeccably dressed suit wasn't enough)! This is a lovely post and you've got a great inspired blog here.

  8. Oh ewan mcgregor, how I love him! and the clothes, yum! It cancels out the annoyingness that is Renee Zellwegger a million times over.

  9. I absolutely adore outfits where the dress matches the jacket lining! I think it's just so darling.

I've never seen this movie, but I think I'll definitely give it a go after seeing these stills!

  10. I loved this film, too. I haven't watched it in a while, as my hubby cannot stand Renee Zellweger - I'll just have to have a "girls movie night" sometime without him!

    Nice pink finds on Etsy!

  11. I love Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor, but while watching the movie, I totally began to care more about Peter and Vikki's characters more than Catcher and Barbara. I don't think that is supposed to happen.

I love all the references to the genre and how deliciously meta the whole thing is.

Thanks for this, I'm gonna have to watch this one again as I haven't seen it since I saw it in the theater.

  13. I watched this movie for the scenery and costumes, and for lovely Ewan. I'm not a Valentine's fan either, though :D

I'm ready to buy about all those pink lovelies, especially the shoes!

  14. Pillow Talk is one of my favourite movies so I shall definitely have to catch the newer version.
I am afraid I am with you on the Valentines Day thing, it's just so contrived-I do have a boyfriend but he knows better than to expect me to go all gooey for one day just because the card manufacturers dictate that we should :-)

  15. I had no idea this film was set back then. I want to watch it, now, though I might just have to turn the sound down :D

  16. I'm not much of a Renee fan, but I do think this film is super cute and funny! Love that Tony Randall makes a cameo!

  17. Yes! I love this film! I saw it in the theatre and then I had to go back a week later because there was just so much to look at. David Hyde Pierce is fantastic in this film, but Tony Randall is still the bee's knees! I'm not a fan of Valentine's either, but I watched this one and Lover Come Back on Sunday. Have you seen Sex and the Single Girl? Down With Love took a lot of it's plot from that one too and Natalie Wood has a fantastic black & white wardrobe in it.
